Introduction to Darkroom Course

This six week course is designed to take students through the process of developing film and making traditional wet prints from negatives using black and white photographic materials. It is an introductory course, enabling the student to grasp the fundamentals of processing, chemicals, darkroom safety and enlarging. Over the six weeks you will develop two rolls of film, make a contact sheet and create a quality silver gelatin print.

The instructor, Benjamin Poulton, is a photographic based artist whose focus is on the traditional black and white process. He has exhibited and received several awards for his work and maintains his own personal darkroom and studio practice. Benjamin brings both a creative and technical perspective allowing his students to flourish in their own unique way.

Black and White film Photography

This course is for students seeking a robust  introduction to the manual operation of a 35mm camera and black-and-white darkroom techniques.  Topics include: principles of exposure, use of natural light in photographic imagery, film processing, enlargement techniques and the machine processing  of prints. You will be encouraged to expand your understanding of the technical and aesthetic  possibilities of photography while developing an awareness of your own approach and interests.  More importantly, you will have the opportunity to work in the university’s photography studios under  the guidance of expert instructors.    Students must bring their own 35mm camera

Learn the basics of colour printing. Emphasis is on printing from a master and your own negatives. Students will learn about the colour wheel, filters, film and papers, processing and print spotting with extensive hands-on in our colour lab.  Prerequisites:Basic Darkroom or equivalent.
